cheaper 2.4 Ghz Radio Equipment

Martin Burr writes: “I have recently heard of a 2.4 GHz system, which may be of interest to those thinking of converting to 2.4. It is a module based system, that is, you replace the module in your trusty Tx (JR or Futaba) and use the companies Rx in your plane. They also do a unit for Multiplex.

The thing that caught my eye was the price…..£ 33.31 yes, £33.31 that’s for a Futaba compatible module and an 8 Channel Rx. With something relatively cheap you always wonder about quality, and performance, but these seem excellent. If you look on www.rcmodelreview, the knowledgeable chap there, gives these a thumbs up, and he rates them on par, or better, than the current big names, they are also doing one with telemetry !

They are available from Giant Cod RC. FR SKY also make Rxs compatible with other systems, a 6 channel one for Spektrum (£6.37) and an 8 channel one for Futaba’s own FASST system (£26.75). I have not used one of their systems yet, but the next time I need an Rx I may well try one from this company. I believe that Ian Duff and Gordon Moore, among others on the F3j circuit are using these systems with no problems.”

Mike Roach also has a low cost 2.4 set: “As part of the package that came with the RC Laser I bought, there is a TX and RX. A few years ago boats were on 27 MHz, then until very recently 40 MHz, but now they have changed over, along with everyone else.

The set provided is the Planet T5 TX with a 6-gram 6-channel RX, all for about £50 (actually, it came at cost price with the boat—about £25!). The TX has mode changing, servo reversing, stick tension adjustment, a 5th channel for retracts or flaps with a servo slow switch, so it’s not a bad basic set. It does not have any model memories, but for an occasional flier who wants the security of 2.4 gig, it seems very good value.”

They’re available locally from the Westbourne Model Centre http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/

And more from Martin: I was looking on the Giant Cod site and I found that they are selling Spektrum compatible Rx for under £7. I thought I would give them a go, so I got 3. They come in a sort of silver coated snappy bag, with a bind plug, but no instructions. They are a direct copy of the Spektrum 6 Ch park flyer (500m range) Rx, and all you need to do is follow the instructions for that.

The original Rx has a thin cover protecting the electronics, this is omitted on the copy, and does make it a fraction lighter (0.6g). The aerials are made from a slightly thicker grade of wire, which I think is better.  In use, they bind the same as the originals, and seem to work just as well, we will see how they perform as the year rolls on…”

And me too: I got 3 and have used two in park fliers with no problems at all—Ed
