CHRISTCHURCH AND DISTRICT MODEL FLYING CLUB

chairman’s Chatter

Having mentioned the club Stanpit Rec Friday evening competition in my last musings I’ve been pleased to see between 7 & 12 guys regularly participating in the glider section, a few in the electric glider comp, too. Don’t think you need a large wingspan model to win. Jim Scott-Telford has been winning during May with a standard Sonata R/E model. Well done Jim.

Two flights per evening, best one counts. Plenty of sport flying too! Easy rules: 7 minute flight during May, timed from release to landing. 8 minutes in June, 9 in July and 10 during August. All landings have to be back on the recreation ground. No spot landing required.

For electric gliders: 30 second climb out under power followed by a 5 minute glide and land in the field same as the glider rules. June, 6 minutes, July 7, August 8 minutes. Two flights per evening, best one to score. Each month your best score is registered, giving four scores. Highest total wins.

This year we are going to continue holding monthly club meetings at the Wheatsheaf, throughout June, July & August. Brian Brockway, who is keeping the Friday evening scores, will give the previous months scores of ALL competitors.  Now you can see how you are doing and who to beat! The final results will be announced at our September meeting.

The monthly meetings will continue the first Wednesday of each month. June 7th, July 5th and 2nd August. The autumn club meetings will be 6th September, 4th October, 1st November and 6th December.

Following the club AGM in May. your committee (listed elsewhere in Slope Off) have been quite busy. Committee meetings every 2 months! Plenty to review as we have a new Secretary and Treasurer, plus David Enticott & Phil Thomson who joined the committee.

We now have a club Membership Secretary, Terry Sullivan. In non committee positions we have Mike Roach compiling the club mag, Slope Off. Mike has also taken on the mantle of Web Master too.  I have taken on Competition Secretary duties. Peter Poll has taken on the roll of printing the magazine along with postal distribution. Brian Brockway is helping out running the Friday Eve comps.  All committee members now have email addresses, as do Peter Poll & Brian Brockway.

Those who retired from committee positions or were club helpers are: Mike Roach (Sec), Ken Spokes (Treasurer), Trevor Hewson (Web Master), Gordon Coy (Competition Sec) and Clive Spencer (Newsletter printing & Distribution). Ken, Trevor, Gordon and Clive were awarded free club membership for this year in recognition of services rendered over the years. This was unanimously voted for at the AGM. Well Done guys.

I wish to appeal to all members to come and support the club at the Hordle Village Fete. It’s on Saturday 2nd September and will be held (as previous years) on Vaggs Lane recreation ground, Hordle. No flying at this event, just static model displays. It’s an opportunity to give the club a high profile and may be recruit a new member!

Last year (April 05 to March 06) we had a total of 94 members. We, the committee, see so few of you at flying sites or meetings which I feel is such a shame. What new models have you bought, or been building? Why not write a few words about the model, like, what you thought of the assembly, or instructions. If it’s electric, tell us all what motor you used and how well it performed. We are never too old to learn, are we? Send your article to Mike Roach or give to any committee member. It doesn’t have to be written using a computer, although this does help. A photo would also be much appreciated.

I have completed and flown the P13 Sport. It’s a 2.5 meter aileron glider that is primarily for slope use, having said that it performs quite well off a bungee (see review in the centre pages - Ed)

Last minute news (end of May). I have been contacted by a school in the Eastleigh area. They have been given a project for each pupil to build and fly a paper aeroplane, yep, all 240 primary school age!!!

David Enticott, Terry Sullivan and yours truly are going to talk to 8 individual classes about the basics and what ailerons, elevators do. This is a full school project with children ranging in ages between 4 and 11. It was our club web site that funnelled the school to us, plus no other group were willing to help!! (No joke) We will talk to each class for 20 minutes, 4 classes before lunch and 4 after. I’ve pointed the school in the direction of the BMFA for paper models.

Our club won back the Rose Bowl trophy on Sunday 28th May.  Actually, it was Martin Burr who did the business.

Bye for now. Think safety and enjoy your flying.
