Sloping Off - March 2003

Annual Rose Bowl Thermal Competition
held on Sunday 1st September 2002
Report by Gordon Coy

Clive gives John the Rose Bowl for yet another year
Note the look of resignation on the faces of the runners up!

This year saw an initial entry of 14 flyers, all from C&DMFC. The weather looked promising, with a nice breeze blowing down the length of the very large field, but unfortunately there was a gradual windshift of 180degrees which caused some problems during the middle rounds. This was further aggravated by problems with the bungees being asked to launch models into a light breeze. The question of more powerful bungees is being looked into. On the more positive side, we had the sun out all day and there was some excellent flying.

The results will show the complete mastery of the competition by John Cheesman and his vintage "Cirrell" although there was one point in the third round where Jim Ruffell with his Flair "Sunrise" was in the lead with 1133 points to John's 1124, so close was the competition. However, in the fourth and final round, John missed a maximum 9min target by just three seconds and Jim could only manage 6min 42s. Overall, Trevor Hewson flying his "Osprey" finished third due to some consistent flying and good landings. Not really a day for high tech plastic models due to the light winds, but success for basic simple models, well flown.

Thanks for John Cheesman for arranging the flying field with Mr. Pottle and special thanks again to him.
