Annual Rose Bowl Competition
Held on Sunday 2nd August 2009
Once again we were all back at Chalbury. It was hosted by the Wessex Soaring Association for which we are indebted. A VERY muddy field entrance being the first obstacle!
A pleasant day with broken cloud, sporadic thermal lift and buckets of sink. Eight entered. Two from C&DMFC who were, Martin Burr & Terry Antell. One from the Phoenix club, Geoff Collins and 5 representing Wessex.
We flew 3 rounds, each being a one hour slot. Competitors had to fly for 10 minutes and land on a spot. Two flights were allowed in the hour. If two were flown only the second one counted, that was my BIG mistake (again).
Three power winches were used and one bungee. This was reduced to 3 winches only for the third round.
After a briefing all were set to battle it out. On the first round only Martin contacted lift.
I had decided to have a second flight in the first round as I’d only managed around 6 ½ minutes! WRONG! That proved to be my failing.
The second and third rounds were punctuated by occasional thermal lift, plus the usual buckets of sink. It was soon realized that exceptional eye sight was required as most thermal activity happened downwind!
This year I changed the landing bonus points to possibly help any flyers who couldn’t make a 10 minute flight. On the spot – 50 points, one metre away 40, two metre 30, three metre 20, four metre 10 points. Maximum score possible in any round being 650. Martin Burr managed a score of 1923 out of a possible 1950!
I wish to thank Mike McLauchlan, Ian Wettstein and Brian Adkins with timing and generally helping the participants.
A bottle of wine was presented to the winner and runner up.
