HELICOPTER FLYING

BY CHRIS TOWNS AND TIM MEAKIN

IMGP6873

"If the weather is decent namely a light southerly breeze and sunny you can find Tim and myself flying heli's at Fawcetts sports field New Milton.

There are no set times during the week - sometimes morning or afternoon early or late. Flying is generally non 3D and currently it’s practice for the "A" certificate. Heli sizes are anything from 250 to 800 size. Sometimes we are joined on Wednesday morning by Leigh, Phil and Mattie the latter two are superb 3D fliers and well worth watching. Keith and John from the fixed wing fliers have also been known to join in too with their Dancer heli's

We are always keen to see more activity, so anyone wishing to come along to fly or just watch is most welcome.

Perhaps a text to me on 07941 389369 would find out if flying is planned that day."

The full size in Afghanistan

Full Scale in Afghanistan

I saw some additional text on the web site just now, so am providing some more details for you to include.

The MD500 is based on an Align TRex 600 airframe. It has 600 mm main blades with an overall main rotor size of 1,350 mm.

The motor is Align BL600L 1,620 Kv, running on a single 6S 5,000 mAh battery through an Align 75 A ESC  Approx 7 mins flight time.

I bought it in a well used but long time unloved state a year ago and have been progressively refurbishing and developing it.

So far I have: repaired misc damage to the fuselage, general maintenance on the airframe, replaced the Rx battery with a 20 A BEC.repaired / refitted the rocket launcher outriggers, made rocket noses.cut access hole to service mechanics and made ventilated cover.cut out jet exhaust for ventilation and painted. fitted lights. added Pilot (Infantryman - he isn't very good at flying).

If it survives action this summer, I will make a cockpit floor, simple control panel and seats, over the winter.  Also have to make some squadron insignia for the Afghanistan theatre camouflage scheme.

The overall objective is to make a "Stand Way Off Scale" heli for flying frequently.  Inevitable damage to be shrugged off.

Cheers, Tim
