JON’S JOTTINGS, BY THE CHAIRMAN

Hi to all members.

Hopefully we are pulling out of winter and will get more favourable weather soon. Having said that we did get a spell of fantastic flying weather at Oldfield earlier in March except it was horrendously cold – I heard an awful lot of members say “I had to stop as I couldn’t feel my fingers”.

I am glad to say that the club continues as a successful group with membership now more than 120. Sadly, we are losing Brian Payne as he is moving near to Oxford to be near his family. Good luck Brian. On the plus side John Macklin has reappeared having had a bad time with Covid over the last few months.

As I write this I am getting ready for the final Indoor Flying session of the winter at Durlston Court. We will start again in October when I hope we will get a few more attending as the numbers have been a bit disappointing this winter.

We have had some really great Workshops at the Bransgore Community Church organised by Paul Johnston. Two of the notable events were provided by Frank Bayes instructing us on making canopies from drinks bottles as well as a treatise on soldering for the model maker. I got some great ideas from these and I am sure many others did.

We are about to re-commence the Friday evening competition in May. This year it will be held at Oldfield (hopefully less midges eating us) and with a 400 foot height limit on the launch.

Recently we have had Southerly winds at Oldfield which have been too strong for East or West crosswind landings. We are going to have to find a way of avoiding landing straight at the pilot box as this is neither safe nor good airmanship.

I cannot sign off without thanking Mike Roach for organising one of the most enjoyable Wednesday evening meetings – the make and fly BMFA Dart models competition. Fantastic Mike. I know he has another more advanced session planned in the summer.

Fair winds.
