Pauls DC6 Pat Tritle

Paul’s fabulous DC6 from the kit by Pat Trittle. Flown successfully at Oldfield last month

Paul and Boeing 727

Another of Paul’s “stick and tissue” models, this is the Boeing 727-100 that for ages I’ve thought was a Pat Trittle design. But after talking to Pat it’s not one of his, rather it’s a design by David A Ramsey, kitted by LDS Models here . It’s a US online store and the laser-cut semi kit costs $114, but there will be some charges for shipping to UK. Paul says he has a second kit sitting in his loft!!

Richard Dockettys Fillons Champion

Richard Docketty’s Fillon’s Champion, a glider from 1946 by Emanuel Fillon. A very complex and challenging build - wait till you see the wings!

Scott L38 Albatross

Scott’s Albatros EDF

Scott Phantom 3

And here his Phantom. Both his photos by Chris Williams

Scott says:

Here’s some info, bear in mind I’ve only had 2 flights on the L-39 and 1 on the Phantom so far so I’m by no means an EDF expert!

Freewing L-39 Albatross running 6s 5200 which gives around 4 minutes of flight time. 53” long with a 43” wingspan. Weighing in at 2.2kg without battery. Flies like a warbird but with the speed and climb of a rocket. Takes off with half flaps and lands easily with full.

Freewing F4 Phantom running 8s 5200 for a comfortable 3.5 minutes of flight. 61” long with a 40” wingspan. Weighs in at just under 3kg empty. Very responsive with fantastic vertical performance, speed and acceleration on 8s and absolutely eats up the airspace.

Considering they are my first large EDF’s running anything more than 3s 2200 packs, jumping straight into the Phantom was probably not the most sensible of choices but you only live once! I’m not using any gyro or stabilisation which I may well do in the future on the F4.

The biggest change I found from flying large warbirds was the need to manage your approach, speed and angle of attack on landing. The Phantom especially with the extra weight of 8s didn’t want to slow (a shorter than ideal approach due to the angle of the sun causing it to silhouette didn’t help) and it rolled off the patch. No big deal but it caught the front wheel in some soft stuff and ripped it out. Easy fix and back ready to fly.

Both would be great at OF when the extension is ready and I’ve dialled in the approaches.

Trevor's Spectre

Trevor’s Spectre, an enlargement of the Kiel Kraft control line original, now used for aerobatics and aero-tow. It got a mention and picture in Chris’s column in RCME this month
