ALEX BUSH’S MUSINGS

This wet Friday found me watching Wimbledon tennis, my  eyes being constantly drawn to the grass playing surface, perfectly  smooth not a tuft in site.  I can only hope that if we keep  over-seeding with a finer type of seed eventually crowding out the tufty type which is so horrible for our wheels. Our constant war with the thistles ended in victory for us, just a few stragglers left.

The outer field was allowed to self-seed and is now being mowed the same height all over felicitating take off & landing anywhere, although  the marked off runways have the better surface.

The barrier of  long grass behind the flight line is doing its job and looks quite attractiive.

The Autumn will see further work like over-seeding, levelling, rolling etc taking place.

 Alex & the team.

We are so lucky to have Alex as the prime mover behind the creation of our patch at Oldfield. Without him it would just be as it was “in the beginning” - Ed

After Dan’s first pass. The original state is on the left, and this is the first 3/4 acre that we rented.

November 2021. I think this was the very first flight off the new grass - hand launch even for a Riot!

On the left is the same day, and on the right a few days later. It’s easy to forget just how ragged the grass was

Much stone-picking and mower-madness later, the field started to look something like, especially after we rented the additional 3/4 acre, which for some reason was much better ground and easier to prepare. Dan’s attempt at seeding was not of the best though.

It’s also easy to forget how just 12 months ago, after a really dry spell, the grass was at its worst!

This year has seen a huge improvement...
